Education

The natural and man-made disasters of recent decades in Aceh have created barriers to accessing education and have taken an enormous toll on people's ability to make positive changes in their lives and escape poverty. This is especially so in hard to reach, remote and rural villages in Aceh.

JMD is one of the few agencies registered with the government and the Ministry of Education to implement the national adult education Paket ABC program.

Often small communities and local authorities are not in a position to allocate money to run a school. In many of the villages that JMD works in, there are no schools and villagers need to travel far to the nearest school, which requires them to have money to pay for transport.

JMD is one of the few agencies in Indonesia registered with the government and the Ministry of Education to implement the national adult education Paket ABC program, which provides certificates equivalent to elementary school, junior, or senior high school diplomas. JMD has administered this program with much success since July 2008 in several locations throughout the province: Aceh Jaya, Pidie Jaya and Aceh Utara, with plans for establishing a school in a new project village in Aceh Timur and at the JMD-supported community center in Calang on Aceh's West coast. Soon JMD will be tutoring students at six strategically located schools throughout Aceh.

In total as of January 2011, 264 students have registered with the ABC program facilitated by JMD. In Aceh Jaya the first stream of Paket ABC students sat their exam in June 2010. Of the 65 students who sat the Paket C exam, all students passed the exam and now have their senior high school equivalency certificates.
